Slide the Cubes is a sliding-tile and ball game. The player's primary goal is to create a channel on each level that runs across the tops of wooden cubes to direct a ball from a start position to a finish position. Their secondary objective is to earn three stars per level and unlock new levels and areas known as chapters.
The game features four chapters with many levels in each one. For example, the first, unlocked chapter has 40 levels. The player unlocks a level within a chapter by completing a puzzle. They unlock a new chapter by earning a specific number of stars.
The board displays the cubes with a somewhat top-down perspective that makes each cube look like a tile. In fact, the player can slide the cubes down, up, left and right like tiles.
The blue cube tile serves as the home or starting position for the ball. The red tile serves as the finish position. The game marks each of these tiles with four screws to indicate that the player can't move the pieces. The board also displays movable tiles marked with grooved areas to represent channel sections. Some sections display gold stars.
The player must slide one or more tiles into new positions to create a channel from start to finish that also contains collectible stars. The game releases the ball to roll down it and through the stars.
Slide the Cubes gives the player five free hints to show them the correct channel shape with a green line. It also allows them to retry as many times as necessary without a penalty.
