Hangaroo is a virtual hangman game that uses a kangaroo instead of a stickman. The player's goal is to guess phrases based on clues using letters from the standard English alphabet across 10 levels. If they win a level, a green dot appears on a mini version of the game's main board at the top-right corner of the screen. If they fail, a kangaroo character with a rope around its neck drops through a hole in the floor, and a ghost version of it with wings and an angry face flies skyward.
The game presents the alphabet above an orange board that displays empty green spaces to represent each letter of a phrase. The phrases are answers to a wide range of topics, such as geography, politics, popular culture, TV and entertainment. That said, the player must have knowledge of these areas from 2001 and before because of the game's original release date.
When the player guesses a correct letter, the relevant empty green spaces fill with the letter. In this way, the game is similar to "Wheel of Fortune." If the player guesses an incorrect letter, a red X appears in one of four slots above the alphabet. They lose if they receive four red Xs.
It's important to note that Hangaroo might disturb or offend some players, especially since it shows a collar knot and loop or "hangman's knot" on the home screen before revealing the kangaroo.
