Bird Word Mahjong is a word puzzle game that features Mahjong elements. The player attempts to create as many words as possible using letter tiles layered in a stacked pattern on a playfield.
On the field, the player can only select uncovered tiles unattached to any other tiles on the left and right sides. When they select the tiles, the letters transfer to a tray below the field. The player then submits the word. Some letters earn the player more points than others, depending on the presence of multipliers on the tray. The player can also use a Wild Tile, which they either earn after scoring at least 25 points with a created word or find among the layers, as any letter to complete a word.
If the player makes a mistake, they can use an undo button marked with a back arrow to remove a letter tile from the tray or an X button to remove an entire word. A word list button displays all of the words the game accepts as valid. A + button allows them to start over entirely.
Bird Word Mahjong helps the player in a variety of ways. Via the gear button, the player can turn on a feature that highlights uncovered, available letters. This area also gives the player access to their top scores, highest word score, longest word letter count, number of played games, and number of cleared puzzles.
The game displays a map with instructions via the ? button. On the home screen, the player can also enable tips to act as guidance during play.
