Mahjong at Home: Scandinavian Winter Edition is a tile-matching game that features a collection of Mahjong games based on different types of patterns. The background for the home screen is the interior of a living room in a modern Scandinavian home in winter. The room contains a calendar with interactive current and past dates and items on shelves with category descriptors (i.e., Letters, Buildings, Pyramids, Symbols, Plants, Zodiac, Things, Forms, Animals and Classic). The player can access up to 366 Mahjong patterns, but they must start with the daily calendar to unlock the patterns within the shelf categories.
When the player starts with the daily calendar, the game opens a pattern randomly from a specific category. The Mahjong patterns all contain round-cornered tiles that display dots, characters, bamboo pieces and dragons that the player must match in identical pairs to remove from the playfield. Every pattern also offers flower and season tiles that the player can match in theme-specific pairs. The player can review the time, remaining tiles and open matches at the top of the screen above a pattern at any time. They can also track the number of hints remaining for a specific pattern.
Mahjong at Home: Scandinavian Winter Edition makes it easy for the player to recognize available pairs beyond the number at the top. If the player selects a tile and then selects a non-matching one, the game automatically turns all available uncovered tiles bright white against the rest. When the player selects a tile, it turns golden yellow. When they use the hint tool, an available pair turns green. Additionally, the game rearranges the tiles automatically to reveal pairs when they run out of matches.
