Grocery Cashier is a career or job simulation game that focuses on the role of cashiers in grocery stores. The player must learn how to run a digital cash register in a grocery store during timed play.
The point-of-sale tool features a digital display, number keys, yellow plus (+) and minus (-) keys, a red Clear key to fix mistakes, a red Total key to add together the prices of all items, and a red Pay button to complete the sale and access cash.
The register doesn't include a barcode scanner. As a result, the player must key in the price of each item, total all items, and accept a form of payment. During a cash transaction, they must give the customer the correct amount of change. During a store gift voucher transaction, they must accept the voucher and ring it up like cash, but they don't hand back any change.
Grocery Cashier features a horizontal white timer bar below the cashwrap that fills with a flashing orange line to indicate the passage of time. The player must complete every step of ringing up the items and accepting payment before the orange replaces the white on the bar. When the player performs the job correctly, they receive points. Their primary goal is to earn as many points as possible.
The game doesn't offer a pause option. If the player wants to stop playing for a moment, they must select the gear icon button and then use the button marked with a semicircular power symbol.
