City Takeover is a connect-style strategy war game that features different city battlefields with colored blocks representing buildings. The player must attempt to occupy every non-blue building by connecting their buildings to the other buildings.
The player can only occupy a building if they can reduce the number of its floors through a connection. As with brick-breaking games, for example, they connect a larger building to a smaller one to reduce a number displayed on the top of the square or other shape that represents the enemy's building. That said, the enemy constructs new floors on each building during the battle.
City Takeover gives the player various skills, in sets of three, that they can use to reduce the number of floors. For example, they can use a skill that reduces the speed at which the enemy constructs new floors on a random building. They might freeze the enemy's actions for a specific number of seconds, randomly reduce the number of floors, add a specific number of floors randomly to one of their buildings, or create a bubble shield around one of their buildings to prevent the enemy from reversing the construction of new floors.
As soon as the player takes over a building, it turns blue. They can then connect it to an enemy building to speed up a battle. As they progress from battle to battle, they can use different-shaped buildings, such as round and triangular ones, to double their troop numbers or the amount of damage to enemy buildings.
