We Become What We Behold is a dystopian game that makes statements about society and how individuals and groups behave when faced with certain events. The idea is that humans shape their tools and then allow those tools to shape them. It's also about cycles of time, the dangers of news and social media, and the impact of technology on society.
The characters in the game are presented as line-drawn figures made of geometric shapes. For the most part, they're gray and white and live in a gray-and-white world. They move around the screen in different directions. Some characters wear accent colors, such as a red t-shirt or heart-shaped hat. Otherwise, everyone is relatively the same.
When the player clicks on an area of the screen to take a snapshot of the figures moving around in We Become What We Behold, the game displays a news story or trending social media post. The characters then react to the coverage. For example, a post about a character wearing a bowler hat can start a trend in which everyone starts wearing the same hat. A second photo of a person wearing the same hat results in a hashtag share about how the popular trend is over.
Over time, trending news can escalate perceptions between people from opposing groups to the point of causing discord and even violence. The game prompts the player to watch these cycles play out.
