Battle Island 2 is a battle-arena fighting game similar to monster-trainer games like Pokmon, Digimon, Dynamons and Animalon. It requires the player to level up their monsters via merge mechanics. They merge lower-level melee and range monsters to create new, more powerful ones.
The player is tasked with helping a girl fight against wild monsters, monster teams backed by other trainers, and boss monsters on various islands. Although a battle plays out on a sports-style court, they use a grid of squares to add monsters to their team and perform merges.
Each monster has a unique attack. Melee monsters attack head-on with parts of their bodies. Range monsters attack by throwing things like energy or fireballs. Melee monsters often perform best along the front line, and range monsters at the back. When the player places strong, range monsters at the back, they create more distance between their monsters and their opponent's melee monsters, which gives them more time to decrease the health of the other team's monsters.
Battle Island 2 rewards the player with coins and random monsters. On a battle court, the player uses their coins to add more monsters to a fight. They receive coins even if they lose a battle. Additionally, they can collect coins in treasure chests and by other means via ad viewership.
The player can't unlock wooden bridges and other options to explore new islands until they earn enough money. They also need battle experience to unlock new abilities.
