Snail Bob 8, or Snail Bob: Island Story, finds the lovable Snail Bob and Grandpa ice fishing at the edge of the forest. While debating the possibility of catching a giant fish or even a mermaid, a monstrous frog cuts a line through the ice and creates an ice floe that pulls Snail Bob out into the ocean. Eventually, the floe brings him near the shores of a tropical jungle. The player's goal is to help Bob the Adventurer make his way safely through the jungle across 30 levels, fight the island's boss frog, and eventually make his way home.
The eighth installment in the popular Snail Bob logic-puzzle platformer series doesn't hold back the action or danger. Bob almost immediately faces a variety of threats, including spear-throwing native frogs and a beast that's a monstrous combination of a rope and dragon head.
Like its predecessors, this game continues to offer a mix of natural and manmade obstacles and traps, including rotating platforms, quicksand, charged barriers, portals that teleport Bob near enemies, flying buttons with white wings, snail-eating plants, deadly bees, giant spiders, and bursts of fire. The player must use common sense, scientific understanding, direct selections, and simple and complex ideas and machines to bypass problems. They also receive access to teleporting platforms, a fireball cannon and a native version of their friend Ant.
The game requires the player to collect three hidden stars per level for a total of 90. The player can find the stars hidden in the backdrop or under, within or behind animals, characters and objects.
Snail Bob 8: Island Story even offers an extra bonus for fans of the television show "Lost" in one of the early levels of the game.
