Pool 8 is a logic-puzzle ball game loosely based on pool. The player completes levels by directing pool balls into pockets on a pool table. Unlike many similar games, they don't need to use a cue stick. Instead, they use their controls to direct the white cue ball to hit one or more solid or striped pool balls on the table. Their goals are to solve the puzzle on each level and rank competitively on friend and world leaderboards.
The game doesn't display a classic pool table. Instead, it's essentially a round-cornered box with holes for pockets and a brown frame. The tabletop features a grid of boxes that show the player the number of positions available to them when rolling the ball. The player directs the cue ball to roll into another ball. The game then rolls the pool ball into a pocket.
As with similar games like Push Puzzle, the ball doesn't always perform as expected. In the early levels, the game stops the ball in the optimal position to hit the next pool ball in order on the table. In later levels, the ball doesn't stop. It rolls from wall to wall.
Pool 8 provides the player with a hint in the form of a rapidly appearing and disappearing row or column of faded, frosted circles. It also offers a reload button that allows the player to retry a level when they make a mistake. When the player runs out of reloads, they can watch an ad to earn more. If a level proves too difficult for them, they can use the Skip button.
