The game is played similarly to the horseshoe basketball drill. Beginning at center court player will need to direct the ball into the hoop to score points. Jerry will pop up onto the rim from time to time and try to block Toms' shots.
Tom & Jerry Backyard Hoops is played on a touchscreen. Points for made shots awarded in 2's and 3's.
The only icon on the game screen is the Pause button located in the top right corner. Here three other icons are displayed.

The keyboard keys for this game are inactive. Players will need to use a touchscreen to play. This adds a layer of difficulty as it depends on the player's ability to guide the shot from Tom to the hoop. No auto shots here.
