What The Hen! Summoner Spring is a card-based fighting game. A wizard's apprentice accidentally frees a chicken that lays golden eggs from its cage while the wizard is working on a potion. The chicken escapes the castle and the wizard by running through a magic portal. The player must help two apprentices chase the chicken through the rural countryside and forests. They use character and elemental cards to fight level by level in battles against a variety of monsters, including enchanted dolls and portals that unleash hordes of enemies. Their ultimate goal is to eventually find the chicken and return it to the castle and wizard.
The player starts out automatically as the male hero apprentice, who uses a wide variety of cards in combat. His character cards include close- and long-range fighters. Every one of these characters is a villager with their own unique weapon. For example, Housewife Angela uses a skillet as a melee weapon. Another character uses a pitchfork. Elemental cards summon any part of nature. For example, with a lightning bolt card, the player can select and hit big groups of enemy fighters with lightning. If the player's current party of fighters isn't working, they can switch parties and even heroes.
When the player wins a fight, What The Hen! Summoner Spring rewards them with coins and gems on cards. On the home screen, this loot appears in standard fields near the top of the screen. The player can earn additional coins and gems by watching ads. After level 7, they can also unlock an arena for additional play.
