Worms is a sliding-tile game similar to block painting games. Across 100 levels, the player directs colorful worms to eat pellets and slide along paths on checkerboards. To complete each level, they must direct a worm to stretch across every square.
The game has black-eyed blue, purple, red and yellow worms. A worm initially appears as a colored circle on a square on the surface of a board. Each level features a different number of checkerboards embedded in the grass among shrubs and stones. The patterns, shapes and sizes of these boards vary by level as well. Some levels also have black pulsating holes similar to portals.
The player must complete a level to unlock the next one. They can't direct a worm to cross back over its body. Additionally, a worm can only slide from edge to edge on a board along one or more squares, columns or rows. If the player leaves any square uncovered, the game marks those areas with Xs and forces them to restart the level.
Worms isn't a difficult game to play. The player merely needs to think several steps ahead and make precise moves. When dealing with portals, they need to imagine how the worm might fill one half of a checkerboard or an entire one before entering a portal and then how it might complete the process on the other half or board.
