Word Chain is a connect-style tile-matching game that features words instead of images. In a sunny, warm tropical island paradise, the player matches and merges tiles based on topic categories.
The player receives round-cornered horizontal white tiles marked with words. Although the game doesn't display connecting lines, the player connects tiles within a category by sliding multiple tiles to overlap and merge with other tiles in the same category in any adjacent direction and across empty spaces. With every successful match, they receive coins. They also receive credit in the form of keys that eventually open treasure chests filled with coins and helpful tools. They can double these rewards by viewing ads.
Word Chain provides tools that help the player find matches. For example, they can use a light to reveal a chain. They can use a magnet to connect any two matching words on the field.
The game also makes play easier by color-coding the tile edges by category. For example, all red-edged tiles belong to the same topic area. Topics include animals, astrology signs, days of the week, dinnerware, food, mealtimes, musical instruments, office supplies and specific types of plants.
If the player attempts to connect tiles that don't match, they lose one of the red heart lives in the top-center area. Diagonal play without an empty space can cost the player a life. When the player does well over time, they receive a new title. They start out as a novice and progress with each win.
