Windows XP Solitaire is a copy of the original virtual Klondike Solitaire card game designed for Windows XP. The player's goal is to redistribute seven columns of layered face-down and face-up cards on the tableau or center of a classic green tabletop to four spaces near the top-right corner of the table, known as the foundation area. The player can only transfer cards using specific moves. Additionally, the foundation piles must start with the Aces by suit on the bottom and end with the Kings on top.
The player can adjust the settings before they begin by selecting Options near the top-left corner. They can choose the easier one-card or harder three-card draw option for the draw pile. They can use Standard, Vegas or No Scoring and even select or deselect various tracking and other options, including a timed game and status bar. If they select Deck to the left of Options, they can change the backs of the cards to images that include a frog, an island beach, an astronaut and a sky.
Windows XP Solitaire uses the same rules as most other versions of Klondike. The player attempts to build the foundation piles by redistributing the cards in the columns in ways that turn over the face-down cards and create builds that they can pull suit-based ascending sequence cards from for the foundation. In the columns, they must build using an alternating-color-and-suit, descending sequence from King to 2. If they can't find the next card for a build or the foundation in the columns, they then draw from the draw pile one or three cards. At any time, they can use the Undo option to reverse their last move.
