What's the Difference? is an online multiplayer spot-the-difference game. Across levels, the player helps a detective explore the world and complete different tasks by spotting and selecting the differences between side-by-side, near-identical images. They receive up to three gold stars and coins for their hard work.
For the spot-the-difference portion of the game, the player must discover the differences as quickly as possible before other online players. They might have to track differences across two drawings or photographs. The only help they receive is a hint magnifier button in the upper-right corner. After they run out of free hints, they must purchase access with their coins. If the player does well enough overall, they earn coins from a trophy league. If they lose a match, they lose one of their heart lives and must restart the level.
The game offers a wide range of side minigames as well, including a try-your-luck game and a daily challenge. With the daily challenge, for example, the player must win matches to collect puzzle pieces to create a daily picture. When they perform well, they receive coins in the detective's piggy bank, which they can then break open. They can also sign up for an account to save their progress and gain access to exclusive in-game offerings. That said, the player can post emojis to express their feelings when up against other players during the matches without a login.
What's the Difference? requires the player to earn as many stars as possible to unlock new areas and levels.
