Treasures of the Sea is a match-3 puzzle game that focuses on the hunt for pirate treasure across 40 levels of deserted tropical islands. The player receives a mission to find specific numbers and types of items per level on a board that displays various treasures and weapons, including bombs, gemstones, scrolls, swords, explosives and chests. They must match three of the same pirate-related items in a line on a row or column to remove the pieces from the board.
Each level presents a different challenge. The player might need to clear a board of items that don't relate to a mission to make the desired ones appear on the board. The game drops additional hidden items from above the top of the board into gaps created by removing items. Some boards have gaps or blocks that prevent the creation of a line. The player must work around these obstacles.
Treasures of the Sea offers booster play via powerups. For example, the player might use a fire and lightning powerup to take out a row and column at the same time or an electric powerup that randomly removes items with electricity. If the player runs out of moves, they must restart the level.
