The player earns purple gemstones every time they unlock a higher-number block. They also earn these gems at the end of each attempt to reach 2048. They can use the gems to buy other types of blocks that enhance gameplay, such as a bomb block that blows up a single block that the player doesn't want to use in a merge or a blue hammer marked with a lightning bolt that takes out an entire stack.
