You can only buy new cards if you have at least one card in your hand that matches its suit. For example, if a card is face-up, it must be in your hand or a free cell space. If you have no cards of a certain suit, you can only buy a new card if it's face down or in an open gap (in other words: not taken by another card). When you buy a card, it must be placed face down before being turned over into your hand; otherwise, it will disappear from that space and not count towards any deals (unless you buy it back later). If a card is turned over and cannot be moved, it will disappear and not count towards any deals. The only exception is in the Free Cell game, where cards can be turned face up into your hand. When you play a card, it must be placed face down before turning it into your hand.
