Royal Mahjong is a timed, connect-style tile-matching game that has a fantasy kingdom theme. The player matches black tiles that feature identical icons in pairs until they reveal a background image and earn points. They use no more than three energy-type connecting lines between tiles to perform the matches.�
The tiles are marked with many common items related to the theme and special and booster items typically seen in bubble-popping and match-3 games. These items include disco balls, dog bone biscuits, gift boxes, jester hats, lanterns, lightning bolts, playing cards, potions, red gemstones, red hearts, rockets, royal crowns, ship steering wheels, stars, TNT bombs, treasure chests and wooden hammers.
The game makes it difficult for the player to find matches. Some items share a lot of color and pattern similarities, such as two identical gift boxes in different colors and two slightly different disco balls with similar colors and patterns. Two types of rockets point in opposite directions, and the red hearts differ between broken and whole. Some small items look almost alike.
Royal Mahjong displays a horizontal timer bar above the tile with a red band that decreases from second to second. The game tracks the player's score in the upper-right corner. It also provides two tools for making matches easier and faster. It offers a magnifier hint button and a double-arrow shuffle button.
The player can use these tools three times each for free. They must then view advertising videos for more assistance.
