Robo Runner is a casual running game with battle-arena elements similar to Mecha Run. Its enhanced gameplay includes run control, a penalty for non-flight runs off a track into the water and more unique weapons.
The player attempts to reach the end of straight- and split-track obstacle courses that float on an ocean. They're allowed to use one robot at any time from a selection of two or more robots to overcome obstacles, including a unicycle robot with guns, a spiked ball, a bladed spinning top, a mini tank, a driller and a plane. Obstacles include enemy troops, spikes, walls and track gaps. Boss fights include enemies that might fire laser beams, shoot crystal formations or generate green tornadoes.
Robo Runner doesn't set the robot on an automatic run. Instead, the player controls all directional and speed-related actions. The weapons fire automatically. Each robot features special abilities that counteract obstacles on a track. For example, the player might use the unicycle robot to shrink the size of giant stickmen, a drill to rip apart objects or a plane to fly over everything. The player accepts these robots and their bonus abilities by watching advertisements. If a level is too difficult, they can skip it by watching an ad as well.
