Mayan Mystery Mahjong is a pair-matching tile game that shares elements with the popular tabletop tile game from China known as Mahjong. The game displays stacked layers of tiles displayed in different formations on a jungle-themed play field. Instead of displaying classic bone or ivory tiles with pictures of stones or dots, bamboo or Chinese characters, Mayan Mystery Mahjong displays stone tiles that feature pictures of items commonly associated with Maya culture, the jungle and peoples who visit jungles, including arrows, bows, darts, drums, flasks, gemstones, horns, jewelry, knives, masks, pots, religious icons, scrolls, sculptures, symbols and tools. To make progress through the game, the player must clear all tiles from the play field on a level before a timer counts down to zero and then clear nine total levels. As the game progresses, it increases in difficulty by adding new pictures and positioning similar objects or colors of objects in close proximity. On the right side of the screen, the player can check their current level number, gemstone-labeled score and a sundial-themed digital timer. They can also pause the game, turn off sound, return to the home screen or use a hint tool.
