Mahjong Tower is a tile-matching Mahjong game that offers a fun alternative to similar games. At first, it seems traditional. The player must remove all the tiles from a Chinese-themed, golden board that features a circular artwork at the center. The game presents the tiles in a well-known tower arrangement with layers of tiles stacked toward a central peak.
The player can only select uncovered tiles with at least one left or right side unconnected to another tile. They must remove the tiles in matched pairs except when dealing with flower (plum, cherry, bamboo and orchid) and season (spring, summer, autumn and winter) bonus tiles. They receive up to five hints during gameplay and can even reshuffle the tiles up to three times to reveal hidden ones.
Yet, unlike most online Mahjong games, Mahjong Tower allows players to create their own layouts and play layouts created by other players. The game automatically loads the traditional tower, which it refers to as the Perfect Tower. The player can also choose from a wide range of user-created layouts, including Mini Tower, Triumphal Arch, Integrated Circuit, Crown, Gate, Butterfly, Cross, Twins Bridge, Euro Dollars, Stronghold, Taichi, Clock, Lozenge, City Square and Maze. Many of these layouts look like their title descriptions and require the player to think several moves ahead to clear the board.
