Mahjong Solitaire for Free is a tile-matching game. In a backyard garden, the player grows flowers by clearing thousands of levels of Chinese Mahjong tiles to earn coins that allow them to buy flower seeds. They then grow and sell the flowers and perform garden renovations.
The game features a daily challenge tournament mode and a levels mode. With the daily challenge, the player clears all tiles from a pattern each day to rank high enough to earn a brass, silver or gold trophy at the end of a month.
With the levels mode, the player clears tiles across thousands of levels to receive the highest possible rank. They start out with the Beginner title. When they win 16,000 times during levels play, they earn the ultimate title of Game Emperor. They track their progress via the My Rank! icon on the home screen. In the same area, they can review the ranks of the top five worldwide players via The Best Players! icon.
Mahjong Solitaire for Free requires the player to follow classic online Mahjong rules. The player matches identical uncovered tiles that have an open left or right side. The game displays their score and the number of tile pairs available at any given time above the playfield. If the player needs help, they receive access to return, hint and shuffle boosters below it.
The garden renovation tasks occur on the home screen. The player uses their coins to buy seeds in the shop. New types of flowers unlock with new levels. The player plants the seeds and grows and harvests the flowers by using spade, watering can, and hand icons that float in bubbles above the planting boxes. When they grow specific numbers or combinations of flowers, they receive stars.
