Mahjong Slide and Merge is a tile-matching game. The player receives different patterns of tiles on a wooden board across levels. Their goal is to remove all tiles, earn gold coins, and collect star points toward new game mastery titles.
The player removes matching pairs in adjacent positions or across open gaps. If any tiles remain on the board that don't fulfill these conditions, they can slide each piece next to or across from its match. That said, the sliding motion only works when there aren't any tiles in the way as obstacles.
The game gives the player three hints via an upper-right button marked with a light bulb. The button highlights a matching pair with yellow and makes the tiles pulse in place. The player receives access free three times. They must then buy additional access with coins or ad views. If they select a tile that isn't in an optimal position, all tiles with the same icon receive an off-green highlighting and shake in place.
Although Mahjong Slide and Merge has "merge" in the title, it doesn't feature true merge play. The player doesn't combine tiles to create higher-numbered ones or new evolution outcomes like the majority of merge games.
