Mahjong Magic Islands is a tile-matching game that combines Mahjong play with magic and travel elements. A cat in a top hat wearing a monocle and holding a bejeweled cane challenges the player to become a magic user and world explorer.
In the first world, titled Magic School, the player removes pairs of tiles to earn enough stars to collect magic elements. After they collect enough of these elements, they can craft a Graduate's Amulet at the Magic Academy and open a portal to other worlds.
The player then travels to cities from all over the Earth portrayed as islands floating in the sky. The locations include London, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, New York, Tibet, Venice, Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai, Reykjavik, San Francisco, Prague, Agra, Istanbul, Bruges, Mexico City, Bangkok, Barcelona, Cairo, Moscow, Athens, Lisbon, Madrid, Riyadh and Split. In each city, the player faces a new challenge and must collect elements to create items like magic coins and potions that can help them reach the next city.
The gameplay in Mahjong Magic Islands is the same as classic Mahjong but with stacked tile patterns that reflect architecture and items from each city. The game also doesn't allow the player to match non-identical tiles from the same category. They can only select identical ones that have at least one side open. The game makes the task harder by slightly repositioning the tiles and changing the camera focus every time the player removes a certain number of pairs.
The player earns up to three stars each time. They must make selections quickly to acquire multipliers that help them advance to each star before the end of the level. They then receive a trunk that contains non-magical gold coins and magic elements. They can receive additional gifts if they're willing to view ads.
