Mahjong Farm is a timed tile-matching game that features matching rules similar to Chinese Mahjong games. Across 30 levels, the player must match pairs of stacked tiles to clear patterns from the screen. Every match provides them with instant points that add seconds to the timer in the top center of the screen. At the end, the game rewards them with up to three yellow stars.
The game displays each stack of tiles in front of a moving background of trees with summertime canopies in multiple shades of green. The movement offers a unique challenge to the player while they try to concentrate on the non-moving stack of wooden tiles that have farm-themed icons that include luscious red strawberries, pink curlytailed pigs, spotted cows, striped water buckets and woolly sheep.
The player can only remove uncovered, highlighted matching tiles. That said, the game doesn't always make the covered tiles clear. For example, it sometimes shows two side-by-side uncovered tiles with only one highlighted tile. In those instances, the player must assume that the game has counted the non-highlighted tile as a covered one.
Mahjong Farm doesn't provide any hint, shuffle or booster tools. It also doesn't alert the player when they have no moves remaining on the field. Instead, if the player selects pairs in the wrong order and no matches remain, they must use the reload arrow icon near the top-left corner to reload the level. If the player allows time to run out, then the game alerts them that they must start the level again.
