Mahjong Bang Bang is a timed, sliding-tile matching game. The player removes classic Chinese Mahjong tiles from a board across levels in matching pairs by primarily sliding instead of selecting pieces.
The game features two modes (Daily Challenge and Hell Mode). The player can only unlock Hell Mode by passing Level 3 of the Daily Challenge mode. They can select a pair of identical tiles that share a side in adjacent positions. Otherwise, they must slide tiles up, down, left and right using gaps between the remaining tiles created by removing pairs. They can push a single tile or, if enough of a gap exists, multiple tiles with one move.
The tiles display bamboo, characters, dragons, peacocks and stones. The player's goal is to align one half of a matching pair with another and remove all tiles before the top-center clock stops counting down. They can slide one tile across a gap into an adjacent position or align it on the blue background so that a straight invisible line can be drawn across a gap between the two tiles.
Mahjong Bang Bang increases the number of tiles and board size from level to level. It provides the player with three tools to remove the tiles faster. They receive two hints, two shuffles and two bombs below the board. The hints reveal a pair, the shuffles rearrange the tiles into new, easier-to-pair positions, and the bombs shake and break apart pairs.
The player only receives two of each tool. The game doesn't reset the tools when playing different modes. To gain more access, the player must watch ad videos.
