Magic and Wizards Mahjong is a timed tile-matching game. The player must clear magic-themed tiles from different backdrops before an hourglass timer with a digital countdown clock stops. They also attempt to earn a high number of points and coins.
The game arranges the round-cornered tiles into single- and multi-layer patterns. With every pairing, the player receives points based on the category of tiles. The categories include Artifacts and Creatures (10 points), Ingredients (15 points), Potions (20 points), Chests (25 points), Gifts (30 points) and Cauldrons, Wands, Pumpkins, Books and Orbs (35 points). Common icons include bats, black cats, colorful bolts of lightning, cauldrons, masquerade masks, night owls, powerful crystals, unicorns and witches' hats.
The player can only match two uncovered identical tiles that have a left or right edge without connection to another tile. They can track the number of available matching pairs at any time in the upper-left area next to an icon of two tiles. They track their completed matches to the right of this area.
Magic and Wizards Mahjong offers five boosters on the right side. The player can use these tools to reveal a pair, shuffle the remaining tiles, activate all tiles available for matching, undo moves and briefly freeze time. For example, when they select the hint button marked with an open eye, the game highlights a matching pair with blue. When they use the candle button, all available pairs flash blue.
