Kings and Queens Mahjong is a tile-matching game in the kings and queens subcategory of games that focus on luxurious items and settings. The player must clear away royal-themed tiles presented in traditional and modern Mahjong patterns from playfields.
The tiles display items commonly found in the presence of royalty, such as banners, chests, coins, crowns, fans, horses, knights, rings, roses, scepters, scrolls, shields and trophies. The player can only remove the tiles in matching pairs. They must complete this task as quickly as possible to earn the highest points and number of stars per level via a multiplier.
The game attempts to deceive the player by displaying items that have slight differences, such as different colored accents and decorative pieces. It layers the tiles in almost invisible ways as well, which makes it harder for the player to know if they've reached the lowest level of a pattern. It also makes some tile colors duller than others, even when the tiles are uncovered and usable.
Kings and Queens Mahjong provides three tools on the right side of the screen to help the player adapt to these challenges. The player can use double twisted arrows to discover new matches by shuffling the tiles. They can undo a move with a back arrow, reveal all available uncovered tiles that have matches with a flashlight, and highlight a matching pair with a light bulb.
