Home Makeover is a match-3 game with a renovation theme. The player updates an old, dilapidated house room by room. To perform every upgrade, they must successfully win increasingly difficult minigames. Pink stars appear to help the player pick spots to change. After the player wins a minigame, they can access an upgrade tool and three different decorative elements.
To win minigames, the player must collect a certain number of specific items represented by tiles, such as candy, hearts and donuts, and extra special items like giggling gingerbread men and square chocolate treats. In match-3 games, a player collects items by aligning three matching tiles in vertical and horizontal lines. In Home Makeover, the player can use this method or clear four tiles in a square shape.
The player can remove tiles faster using boosters, such as rockets that race through rows or spiral out of control, bombs that explode nearby tiles, spaceships that blast tiles by type and hammers that break individual tiles. These boosters are especially useful when dealing with obstacles, including fast conveyor belts, pink bubbles, crates and chains. The player can buy additional boosters with coins they collect as winnings.
