Haunted Heroes is a casual runner that requires a player, in the form of a ghost avatar, to possess different superheroes to overcome obstacles and win races. Each concrete track features huge obstacles, including winding formations, spiked wheels and spinning tops, thick brick walls, and deep waters. The player possesses a hero or heroine with their ghost avatar by directing it through a vertical, rectangular portal.
The player's avatar doesn't automatically die if it hits an obstacle. Instead, the powers of their hero or heroine damage the object, or the character collapses. With the second option, the ghost avatar continues down the track until it can possess another hero or heroine or float to the black-and-white checked finish line.
In some cases, a hero or heroine moves faster after they hit an obstacle. The player must then redirect them away from the water unless they're a shark or can fly.
Haunted Heroes provides the player with the opportunity to master skills. They can play a special level. A hero or heroine might offer physical strength or missiles to bash through obstacles, or the power to slide through the air on an ice ramp. The player can sometimes upgrade a power by directing the possessed hero or heroine through a second portal that features that specific character's icon.
The player can also play new heroes by using bonus cards before a race. That said, they must watch an advertisement. They can also skip a hard level by watching an ad.
