Good Old Spider Solitaire is a card game that simulates classic Spider Solitaire. It requires the player to create eight columns that mimic spider legs from 10 columns of layered face-down and face-up cards and a deck of leftover cards. The game transfers completed legs to semi-transparent gradient-white spaces near the bottom of the screen.
The player starts by selecting a difficulty option (i.e., One Suit, Two Suits, or Four Suits). Of the three modes, One Suit is the least difficult. Four Suits complicates and lengthens play. This area also allows the player to review their ongoing stats (i.e., best score and number of wins) per mode.
The game displays the columns on a green baize tabletop. The player creates the legs by rearranging the cards into partial column builds of two or more cards in a layered descending standard order from King to Ace. They move single non-layered cards and partial builds onto next-highest cards.
Good Old Spider Solitaire makes play difficult in several ways. Whether the player selects one suit or more, it uses colors and designs that cause the cards to blend together visually too much, which makes it harder to sort quickly. Also, when the player runs out of column moves and selects the deck in the lower-right corner, the game drops a card onto every column, which blocks builds.
That said, the game offers semi-transparent free-cell spaces at the top of each column. The player can use these areas to start a column with a King card or temporarily reposition an unneeded card or partial build.
