End of War is a post-war simulation game that tasks a player with rebuilding neighborhoods, towns, cities and other populated areas after an enemy uses bomb and missile strikes against the country. The player, via a lumberjack character who witnessed the destruction from afar and found his home and family destroyed, must visit burned out ruins, rescue people trapped beneath rubble, gather resources and rebuild structures.
The player doesn't have to perform any special maneuvers using the controls. They merely need to run the lumberjack into an area to make the character perform tasks automatically based on the location of the movement. The character initially clears away debris to free a person. The people the lumberjack rescues or meets during their travels then help them construct homes, barns, windmills, saw mills and other buildings using locally sourced materials.
Some parts of the landscape improve without direct intervention. For example, trees start regrowing as soon as the characters clear a site. Lamp posts appear as soon as buildings reach a certain level of construction.
As End of War progresses, the player must start to use cut logs to make wooden planks to build some structures. They also need to sell wood for cash. Additionally, they can pick up people waiting or resting around campfire barrels to help with rebuilding efforts. To collect these people to work, they might need to watch an advertisement.
