Emergency Surgery is a makeover game that explores semi-realistic simulated cases in an urgent-care clinic. The player is presented with seven patients who have a variety of ailments. They must help restore each patient to a healthy state.
The game doesn't acknowledge that it's sometimes impossible to restore the health, beauty or well-being of anyone with a single emergency office visit in the real world. Instead, it helps young players learn basic medical treatment options for real and fictional, wild and wacky healthcare emergencies. For example, a mailman has a dog bite and the dog still attached to him; a criminal has head and neck injuries with his head stuck between a section of metal bars; and a woman has gum and strange objects stuck in her hair.
The player receives access to a wide range of realistic and unrealistic treatments. They might use water to scare the dog, stitch the wound, and treat the injury with ointment. They might extract the objects from the woman's hair carefully and then use ice to harden and remove the gum.
Emergency Surgery also explores dress-up makeover elements. For example, the player cuts and replaces hair, restores and replaces damaged teeth, and replaces and updates clothes.
