Chess Royale is a battle game that focuses on logic, tactics and strategy from traditional chess play coupled with magical abilities in a tropical paradise setting with a pirate theme. The game challenges the player to use chess moves, the placement of extra pawns and obstacles and transmogrification of existing pieces to stop the enemy's king.
The player's pieces, blue versus the enemy's red, are positioned on a two-tone peach chessboard. The game teaches the player the traditional chess directions these pieces can move at any given time via turn-based play. The player must imagine potential moves several steps in advance of the actual moves by the computer-based enemy.
Chess Royale's unique system supplies the player with the option to add pieces to the board via ability cards when they save up enough points. Beyond placement of new pawns, they can slide baskets filled with fruit, for example, onto empty spaces to obstruct the movement of enemy pieces. Additionally, they can replace an existing pawn with a knight, rook or other piece. The type of piece depends on a random offer during a turn.
