Mahjong at Home: Aloha Edition, also known as Aloha Mahjong, is a tile-matching game. On an Hawaiian island, the player receives access to a hut filled with objects. Each object represents a category of puzzle patterns designed using round-cornered white Chinese Mahjong tiles. The categories include classic patterns, animals, plants and symbols. The player can also access a calendar that offers a daily pattern.
The player's primary goal is to remove the layered tiles from a wooden tabletop. Additionally, they must use gifts to unlock new tile designs and backgrounds.
The tiles feature classic Mahjong elements, such as characters, dragons, dots, bamboo, flowers and seasons. The player typically matches identical tiles except in the case of flowers and seasons. They can match any two tiles within each of those sets. They can match uncovered ones with at least one unattached side as well.
Aloha Mahjong allows the player to access patterns from previous months. It displays the timer, the number of remaining tiles on the table, and the number of available matches along the top of the screen. It also provides forewarning about a pattern's level of difficulty with a pop-up. The player receives a hint magnifier button in the top-right area that gives them three hints. If they need additional hints, they can earn more through ad views.
When the player selects a pair, the game places the pieces in a tray at the bottom-right corner. If necessary, they can use a semi-circular back arrow next to the tray to undo their last move.
